How do you catch a hare? Okay, but how do you then go about gutting it? And how do you start a fire without a lighter? These are questions to which Bojan Šarčević’s artist’s book, devised in the »helpful tips« format, endeavours to provide comprehensive answers. A modicum of patience is required in order to fathom out the instructions, formulated as they are in bizarre onomatopoeic eastern European English. Nevertheless the explanatory drawings do provide an immediate aid to comprehension. Born in Belgrade in 1974 Bojan Šarčević now lives in Berlin, having emigrated with his parents from the remnants of the former Yugoslavia to Paris, where he took up his studies. His choice of themes and materials for his works is, by comparison, so diverse for one so young, that it is impossible to categorize it as just video, sculpture, installation or merely works on paper. There is a catalogue of questions perpetually implicit here – aided perhaps by the fact of his emigration – with which the observer finds him or herself confronted: Who am I? Where do I come from? Where am I going?
This publication was published in the context of the exhibition Verticality Downwards by Bojan Šarčević at Kunstverein München in Summer of 2003.
