IMI Giese
June 03 – July 18, 1993
"Imi Giese (1942 to 1974) failed because of the structures of the market and his personal condition. His work, unruly and self-reflexive, combines minimalist and conceptual tendencies that lead to its own problem. The last time a solo exhibition [...] was shown was in 1979 at the Kunstverein München; after the advanced sifting of the estate, the Münchner Kunstverein is showing an extended exhibition of his work."
"Developed from basic geometric shapes and assembled from multiple elements, Giese's sculptures, as well as his scanning and questioning of rows of numbers on typewriter, graph, photographic, or tracing paper, impress with formal rigor and provoke thought about the workings of perception."
"Although Giese strictly resisted narrowing categorizations of minimal and conceptual art, his works become understandable from the context of this art movement."
