Der Kunstverein München zieht mit der fünfteiligen Gesprächsreihe Infrastructures in den städtischen Außenraum und widmet sich – im Austausch mit Wissenschaftler*innen, Theoretiker*innen, Künstler*innen und dem Publikum vor Ort – dem gegenwärtigen Verständnis von Öffentlichkeit und ihren Infrastrukturen. Als mobiler Raum findet das Projekt an wechselnden Orten im Stadtraum statt und möchte so der zentralen Ausrichtung Münchens entgegenwirken. Öffentlichkeit als dynamischer und fragiler Raum des gesellschaftlichen Lebens ist mit der Anwesenheit weiterer Personen sowie dem Austausch mit ihnen, ob real oder virtuell, wahrnehmbar. Sie steht immer im Verhältnis mit einem politischen System, aber auch mit öffentlichen Institutionen und den Medien. Hier bilden und äußern sich Meinung, Kritik sowie Vorstellungen von Freiheit, die auch immer Fragen nach Kontrolle oder Sicherheit beinhalten. Die dabei vermehrt aufkommenden Diskussionen um den Begriff der Zensur zeigen, dass eine genaue Kontextualisierung und Differenzierung erforderlich ist. Denn ihr, definiert als Versuch der Kontrolle von Informationen und in demokratischen Systemen gesetzlich reguliert, eilt oft eine zu schnelle Beurteilung voraus.
Das Projekt Infrastructures betrachtet ausgewählte Themenschwerpunkte, darunter der Stadtraum, der Körper, Erinnerungsräume, die digitale Öffentlichkeit sowie die Kulturinstitution, um ein besseres Verständnis für ihre Strukturen und den ihnen inhärenten Kontrollmechanismen zu bekommen. Mehr

With the five-part discussion series Infrastructures, Kunstverein München moves into the public space. In close dialogue with scientists, theorists, artists, and the audience onsite, it aims to reflect upon the current understanding of the public sphere and its infrastructures which constitute our social life. Created as a mobile space, the project will take place at changing locations of Munich’s urban environment, aiming to counteract the central orientation of the city. The public sphere as a dynamic as well as fragile space for social life is perceptible through the presence of others and the exchange with them, be it real or virtual. It constantly correlates with a political system, but also with public institutions and the media. Here, the formation and expression of opinion and criticism can be identified as well as ideas of freedom, which always include questions of control or security. The discussions about the notion of censorship that are increasingly emerging in this context show that a precise contextualization and differentiation is necessary. This is because, defined as an attempt to control information and legally regulated in democratic systems, it is often preceded by an overly hasty assessment.
The project Infrastructures takes a closer look at selected key topics, including urban space, the body, spaces for remembrance, the digital public sphere as well as the cultural institution, in order to gain a better understanding of their structures and inherent control mechanisms. More

Emanuel Almborgs Film The Majority Never Has Right On Its Side ist als Teil der Onsite- und Online-Serie Schaufenster zu sehen.
Die Arbeit handelt von der Summerhill School in England, die 1921 gegründet wurde und immer noch existiert. Die Schule ist bekannt für ihre antiautoritäre pädagogische Ausrichtung, die auf den egalitären Prinzipien von A.S. Neill aufbaut, einem sozialistischen Lehrer aus Schottland, der oft als „zynischer Utopist“ bezeichnet wird. Der Film verbindet historische Aufnahmen aus dem schuleigenen Film- und Videoarchiv mit Interviewausschnitten von aktuellen Schüler*innen, um die gegenwärtige Rolle sowie das „Image“ der Schule zu untersuchen. Emanuel Almborg’s film, The Majority Never Has Right On Its Side, is on view as part of the onsite and online series Schaufenster.
The work is about the Summerhill School in England, established in 1921 and still open. The school is known for its anti-authoritarian pedagogy built on the egalitarian principles of A.S. Neill, a socialist schoolmaster from Scotland often described as a “cynical utopian.” The film looks at the school today in relation to its “image” by using the school’s own film and video archive. Die Writers Residency ist eine Kooperation zwischen dem Kunstverein München und dem Kulturreferat der Landeshauptstadt München, und richtet sich an Autor*innen, Kritiker*innen sowie an Künstler*innen, deren Praxis auf Schreiben basiert. Sie umfasst eine zweimonatige Unterkunft in der Villa Waldberta am Starnberger See bzw. im Ebenböckhaus in München sowie ein monatliches Stipendium. Das Konzept greift inhaltlich die Tradition der Stadtschreiber*innen auf, die früher wie auch heute von Ort zu Ort zogen, um jeweils die Geschichte einer lokalen Gemeinschaft aufzuschreiben und so einen neuen Blick auf die erlebte Wirklichkeit geben. Die Writers Residency basiert auf dem Gedanken, der Tätigkeit des Schreibens für zwei Monate ein temporäres Zuhause zu bieten und eine Auseinandersetzung und Austausch mit Besucher*innen und der Stadt München zu ermöglichen. Wir freuen uns, Alexandra Symons Sutcliffe als aktuelle Teilnehmerin der Writers Residency für den Zeitraum Juni / Juli 2020 vorzustellen. Symons Sutcliffe arbeitet als Kunstkritikerin, Kunsthistorikerin und freiberufliche Kuratorin, und promoviert derzeit in London.

The Writers Residency is a cooperation between Kunstverein München and the Cultural Department of the City of Munich, and is aimed at authors, critics as well as artists whose practice is based on writing. It consists of a two-month stay at Villa Waldberta on Lake Starnberg or Ebenböckhaus in Munich as well as a monthly stipend. The concept takes up the tradition of the town chronicler, who used to and still does go from place to place to record the history of local communities and take a new look at lived realities. The intention is to approach fiction and narration outside of traditional exhibition spaces through formats such as public readings in both the place of residence and other venues. The Writers Residency is based on the idea of offering a temporary writing home for two months and enabling discussion and interchange with visitors as well as the city of Munich. We are pleased to introduce Alexandra Symons Sutcliffe as the current participant of the Writers Residency for the period of June / July 2020. Symons Sutcliffe works as an art critic, art historian and freelance curator, and currently works towards a PhD in London.
