Yalda Afsah

Every word was once an animal

bis 3. April 2022 / through April 3, 2022

DE

The solo exhibition Every word was once an animal by Yalda Afsah is on view through April 3, 2022. The human relationship with animals, and the agency surrounding that interaction is critical to the work of the German-Iranian artist. In her films, Afsah focuses on questions of power, care, and control in relation to domestication. Using three examples—bullfighting, horse dressage, and pigeon breeding—she examines the blurred boundaries between affection and identification with animals on the one hand, as well as submission and human domination on the other.

In conjunction with the exhibition, curator’s tours take place bi-weekly, as well as a lecture by biologist and publicist Cord Riechelmann on Wednesday, March 16 at 7pm.

On and Off the Grid eröffnet mit dem Rotterdamer Publikationsprojekt Unbidden Tongues.

On and Off the Grid is a new yearly program of presentations and events dedicated to various form(at)s of publishing. Occupying the window display in the Hofgarten, and by that the only permanently accessible space of the institution, the format attempts to provide a platform for the introduction, examination, and (re-)negotiation of the materials and processes involved in publishing.
The series conceives of “publishing” in a broader sense beyond and between conventional types of media. Here, questions of form, urgency, producer, and addressee are at the center. Different agents such as publishers, bookstores, artists, designers, typographers, and authors occupy the window display for a period of six weeks at a time. The actual space itself is structured by a modular display system designed by Berlin-based Studio Martha Schwindling. Guests are invited to work with and within this structure in order to create individual presentations and thus systems of reference that provide insights into their respective practices.

The first one to inhabit the window display is Unbidden Tongues. Since its beginnings in 2020, Unbidden Tongues has published previously produced yet relatively uncirculated work by cultural practitioners busy with questions surrounding civility and civic life—particularly in relation to language and its administration. Not only interested in overt forms of creative and experimental writing, Unbidden Tongues also considers documents that might otherwise slip through the cracks of interest, or of what is perceived to be writing and, correspondingly, publishing in the first place. As such, supplementary paperwork like nursing records and regulatory reports have been points of reference throughout.
The first five titles—each dedicated to a single person, namely Ruth Wolf-Rehfeldt, Karen Brodine, Adrian Piper, Janet McCalman, and Theresa Hak Kyung Cha—have focused on people who alongside their practices also happen to have been, at one time or another, administrators of sorts. While this is not a calculated coincidence, the ways each of the women have engaged with language and its handling is what brings them together, particularly when it comes to the act of speaking up, out, or not in turn—often within the constraints of behavioral requirement, such as while at work or when flouting expectation to conform. Therefore, the series is an ode to unmediated expression, or, as the title goes, to unbidden tongues everywhere.

Edited by Isabelle Sully, Unbidden Tongues was previously published by Publication Studio Rotterdam and, from the next title onwards, will be published by Kunstverein München.

Peripheral Alliances

Residency am / at the Ammersee

Februar – September 2022 / February – September 2022

DE

The residency Peripheral Alliances enters its second iteration in 2022. The list of participants is extended this year by Lou Drago, Frances Drayson, Manuel Falkenhahn, Nina Kettiger, marie lea lund, Sophie Paul, Alice Rekab, Matthew Richardson, and Mahsa Saloor.

The former farm in Inning close to the Ammersee is available to the Kunstverein München to accommodate artists, cultural workers, writers, researchers, and critics of all practices through September 2022. The residency aims to provide a space for the participants to probe communal forms of production and assymetrical togetherness, and thus to question the conventional logics of labor as well as social reproduction.
Peripheral Alliances considers itself as an organization of shared infrastructures of artistic production beyond its geographical location and is interested in methods of commoning as a counter-model within a highly competitive art landscape. The intersections of this collaborative network enable the exchange of emotional as well as material resources. The residency is intended to serve the actual needs of those who inhabit it, and not the utopian concerns that are conceived with it: a desire for relational modes of solidarity emerges and becomes a catalyst for community.
