Die Agentur der Dokumente: Listening Session zu Terry Eagleton

Culture and the Crisis of Capitalism, 1992

Wednesday, May 22
7pm (on time)

On March 19, 1992, the Marxist theorist Terry Eagleton was invited to the Kunstverein München to give a lecture entitled Culture and the Crisis of Capitalism. The lecture was based on his book The Ideology of the Aesthetic, published in 1990, in which he outlines a Western history of ideas on the concept of aesthetics and explores its complex relationship to politics, art, reason and law. The event was one of the first under the direction of Helmut Draxler, who, together with curator Hedwig Saxenhuber, was responsible for the Kunstverein's program from 1992 to 1995. It is not surprising that Eagleton's ideas were met with interest by the new team in Munich, because here, too, the focus was on the points of contact and contradictions between the artistic program and political and discursive issues.

This is the first show of Die Agentur der Dokumente (The Agency of the Documents), a collaboration between the archive of the Kunstverein München and Radio80000. The recording of the 1992 lecture is presented here as a radio drama, accompanied by music and sound.
