History of the Jahresgaben and current classification

The Jahresgaben date back to the founding of the Kunstverein München in 1823, when members received an art print every year as part of their membership. Over time, this developed into a group exhibition with works by artists mostly living in Munich. The Jahresgaben are an important format that reflects the density and diversity of the contemporary art scene in the city of Munich, showing and discussing its works. The focus of the Jahresgaben is on artists who have a connection to the city of Munich, live and work here and/or have completed their training here, as they are therefore in a lively exchange with the institution. The format of the Jahresgaben is still important to the current team at Kunstverein München as a way of coming together at the end of the year and revitalizing the venue as a center of art in this city.

Mutual support

Members of the Kunstverein München have the opportunity to purchase works at special prices and thus support local artistic production and the Kunstverein München. Half of the proceeds from the sales go to the artists and the other half to the Kunstverein and the artists’ Künstlersozialkasse (social security fund). The exhibition thus supports the work of the Kunstverein on the one hand and the invited artists on the other. It is a solidarity-based form of mutual support between the artists and the institution. The collaboration of the past year is celebrated and promoted through this format.

Affordability for all

It is important to the Kunstverein München team that members with diverse backgrounds and means have the opportunity to afford an annual gift. Therefore, the following price regulation applies: for the Jahresgaben, each artist may submit up to four works, two of which may not exceed the retail price of 700 EUR each.

Selection criteria

The selection of artists for the Jahresgaben reflects the greatest possible diversity and is made by the entire Kunstverein München team.
