Adrian Piper

Retrospective

October 7 – November 22, 1992

with the lecture Xenophobia and the Indexical Present by Adrian Piper on November 6 at 7pm.

Adrian Piper was born in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City among a poor, Black community. Her parents were of mixed color or race. From the works “Political Self-Portrait” 1, 2, 3 (1978 - 1980) we hear that as a child she was teased by the other children in the neighborhood as “paleface”. At school, where most children were white, she suddenly found herself confronted with racist statements commonly made against Black people. This confusion about her identity or place in society according to the categories of race, class, and gender mainly defines her works of the early eighties.
