Education program
Kunstverein München is one of the oldest and, with almost 1,300 members, largest institutions of its kind in Germany. Since its founding in 1823, it has not only been an essential part of the Munich art scene, but has also gained international recognition far beyond the city limits as an innovative and controversial platform for contemporary art and its discourses.
Contemporary art is challenging, but also inspiring. Based on its exhibition program, the Kunstverein, in cooperation with Waltraud Mast, Executive for Cultural Education in the Department of Education and Sport of the City of Munich, and Prof. Dr. Birgit Dorner, Professor of Art Education at the Catholic Foundation University of Applied Sciences Munich, has developed an integrative education program that is aimed at children and adolescents from different parts of Munich and day care centers, with particular attention to less centrally located districts. By means of various formats that deal with the content of the current exhibitions, the Kunstverein would like to open itself up to young people who may have less access to cultural offers due to their social and economic environment.
Kunstverein München sees itself as a place of dialogue and exchange and has set itself the task of providing easy access to contemporary art, through which it would also like to address people from other educational backgrounds. Participatory and discursive methods, as well as workshops for children and adolescents with cultural pedagogical support provide an age-appropriate and interactive insight into the artistic program and the institution itself. The new Archive Space at the Kunstverein serves as a venue for these activities and offers a concrete space for this educational initiative.
The collaborative development and realization of long-term educational projects is a central concern of the Kunstverein. In this context, the primary goal is to build a common space for action that values, brings together, and activates different repertoires of knowledge and experience as well as facilitates collective and individual approaches to various themes and questions in the context of the artistic program of Kunstverein München.
