On the occasion of the publication of the first comprehensive monograph Act Like You Know Me by American artist Pippa Garner, the work Un(tit)led (Gear on Blue 01) is available as a limited edition. The edition is a photograph Garner took in 1986 and is exemplary of her photographic gaze – located between an artistic and commercial practice, on the aesthetics of mechanics. The work can be purchased either individually or together with the newly released publication.
Born in 1942 in the Chicago suburb of Evanston, Illinois, the U.S.-American artist and author formerly known as Philip Garner, is pushing back against systems of consumerism, marketing, and waste and has created a dense body of work including drawing, performance, sculpture, video, photography and installation over her five-decade-long career. Her uncompromising approach to life and practice has allowed her to interact with the worlds of illustration, editorial, television, and art without ever quite becoming beholden to them.
Act Like You Know Me is the first critical survey of Pippa Garner’s radical practice, supplementing exclusive visuals and texts by Garner with archival press materials on the artist from such notable figures as Glenn O’Brien, Ralph Rugoff, and Hayden Dunham, in addition to three new original commissions from contemporary, award-winning authors Shola von Reinhold, Dodie Bellamy, and Fiona Alison Duncan. The Publication ACT LIKE YOU KNOW ME builds upon a touring exhibition of the same name—the first solo exhibition of Pippa Garner in Europe—launched at the Kunstverein Munich in the fall of 2022 with subsequent stops at the Kunsthalle Zürich (Zurich, Switzerland, 2023), FRAC Lorraine (Metz, France, 2023) and White Columns (New York, NY, 2023).
