Sudoku is a Japanese puzzle in which deductive logic is used to place the number 1-9 in the correct places within concentric grids of squares. For Renee Levi, her nearly daily practice of working on Sudokus is not about finding the correct solutions, but a stimulus to draw, to make marks on paper, and to enter a more unconscious creative realm. For the exhibition Sudoku in Kunstverein München, Levi applied a Sudoku onto the entire space — installing a grid of 280 x 280 cm paintings on cotton across both sides of the four exhibition rooms. Her new edition, however, is far more compact. Levi has painted around grids in a book of Sudokus, which she then unstapled and dismantled into double-sided 2-page spreads.
