THE ARCHIVE AS ... UNCANNY FUTURE
Conversation with Nora Sternfeld
Sunday, June 4
4pm
Something is haunting the archive, because it insists more than it exists. Nora Sternfeld calls this “archival unconscious” the unarchivable. In this way, she focuses on processes of working through precisely those dimensions of the archive that elude and resist its orders and infrastructures: affects, conflicts, contradictions.
With this concern for the unarchivable, we join Sternfeld in addressing the Kunstverein archive and consider its records as memory material to confront discourses and aesthetics that continue to haunt German art to this day. Which aesthetics shaped the art of the 20th century that seemed progressive at the time but was, as we must say today, characterized by reactionary and völkisch-nationalist tendencies?
The conversation will be held in German.
