Romeo’s eyes ist die erste institutionelle Ausstellung von Simon Lässig und Vera Lutz und versammelt neu konzipierte filmische, fotografische und installative Arbeiten, die sich mit Prozessen des Sehens und Zeigens auseinandersetzen. Die Praktiken der Künstler*innen vereint ihre Auseinandersetzung mit verschiedenen Modalitäten von Sprache und Raum sowie mit der Frage, wie sich das Selbst konstruiert. Ihre Arbeiten sind häufig in situativer Serialität konzipiert und lassen sich als Gesten der Wiederholung oder des Rückgriffs auf vorherige formale und narrative Strategien verstehen.

Romeo’s eyes erweitert sich auch um andere Register, die von Lässig und Lutz als gleichwertig zu den für die Ausstellung entwickelten Arbeiten verstanden werden. In diesem Zusammenhang haben sie die Dichterin, Übersetzerin und Literaturwissenschaftlerin Jennifer Scappettone eingeladen, einen Vortrag über ihr Buch The Republic of Exit 43 zu halten – ein hybrides Werk aus Lyrik, Archivrecherche und visuellem Experiment. Darin legt sie gewissermaßen eine giftige Mülldeponie nahe ihres Elternhauses frei und kartiert die Verflechtungen von Sprache, Erinnerung und ökologischer Zerstörung. In ähnlicher Weise wie Lässig und Lutz widmet sich Scappettone so der Fragmentierung und den Konditionierung des Sehens. Die Veranstaltung findet am Freitag, den 20. Juni um 19 Uhr statt.

Romeo’s eyes marks the first institutional exhibition by Simon Lässig and Vera Lutz and brings together newly developed filmic, photographic, and installative works that explore the processes of seeing and showing. The artists share an engagement with different modalities of language and space, as well as an inquiry into the construction of the self. Their works are often conceived in situated seriality and function as gestures of reiteration or recourse to preceding formal and narrative strategies.

Romeo’s eyes also expands into other registers, which Lässig and Lutz consider as equal to the works developed for the exhibition. In this context, the artists have invited poet, translator, and literary scholar Jennifer Scappettone to give a talk on her book The Republic of Exit 43, a hybrid work of poetry, archival research, and visual experimentation. It excavates a toxic landfill near her childhood home, mapping the entanglement of language, memory, and environmental ruin. In tune with Lutz and Lässig’s practices, Scappettone similarly shares an attentiveness to fragmentation and conditioned structures of looking. The event will take place on Friday, June 20, at 7pm.

Die Publikation kann als (Bestands-)Aufnahme des umfassenden Projekts Key Operators gelesen werden, das im Herbst 2024 stattfand und die Verknüpfung von weiblicher Arbeit und technologischem Fortschritt fokussierte. In einer Schachtel zusammengehalten, bieten die gebundenen Seiten – zusammen mit neunzehn ungebundenen Broschüren – eine Reflexion der Ausstellung, des begleitenden Veranstaltungsprogramms und der Beitragenden.

Das Buch ist kein Beiwerk zur Gruppenausstellung, sondern vielmehr eine Übersetzung ihrer Anliegen, Fragestellungen und Struktur in die gedruckte Form. Ähnlich wie die Ausstellung fungiert die Publikation als Speicher sowie Medium für Information. Ihre offene Form folgt den Ansätzen der räumlichen Umsetzung und ist somit eine Übertragung von deren Prozesshaftigkeit, Nicht-Linearität und Multiplizität. Während der gebundene Teil sich auf die visuelle Dokumentation der Ausstellung, der Werke und der räumlichen Beziehungen fokussiert, sind die ungebundenen Broschüren jeweils den Beitragenden gewidmet – und teils von ihnen konzipiert worden.

Die Publikation wird von Gloria Hasnay herausgegeben und wurde von Max Schropp gestaltet.

The publication serves as a record(ing), of sorts, of the comprehensive, eponymous project Key Operators, which took place in fall 2024 and focused on the links between feminized labor, technological advancements, and their associated languages. Packed neatly in a box, the bound pages—along with nineteen unbound brochures—offer a reflection on the exhibition, its accompanying program of events, and the featured contributors.

The book is not an aside to the exhibition, but rather a translation of its concerns, questions, and structure into the printed form(at). Much like the exhibition, it functions both as information memory and information medium. Its open composition follows the intents of its spatial predecessor and is thus a transmission of its processuality, non-linearity, and multiplicity. While the bound section centers on the visual documentation of the exhibition, the works, and the various spatial relations, the unbound brochures are each dedicated to—and in several cases conceived by—the individual contributors.

The box-book is edited by Gloria Hasnay and designed by Max Schropp.

Der Künstler, Herausgeber und Autor Aristotelis Nikolas Mochloulis ist derzeit Writer-in-Residence in der Villa Waldberta. Er ist Gründer und Herausgeber des Newsletters Holdings, der seit 2022 in unregelmäßigen Abständen als kostenloses PDF über eine private Mailingliste verschickt wird. Jedes PDF enthält einen oder mehrere Texte, die mit Bildern von einem oder mehreren Künstler*innen kombiniert sind, sowie eine Anmerkung des Herausgebers. Oftmals umfasst Holdings Bilder oder Texte aus Büchern oder dem Internet, die ohne Genehmigung abgetippt, kopiert, eingefügt oder gescannt und in die PDF-Dateien integriert wurden; dies ist als eine Mischung aus Aneignung und Dateifreigabe zu verstehen.

Für das Holdings Reading am Samstag, den 21. Juni wird Mochloulis alle bisher veröffentlichten Texte in umgekehrter chronologischer Reihenfolge vorlesen. Die Lesung dauert etwa fünf Stunden. Wir treffen uns um 15 Uhr am Kunstverein München; die Veranstaltung selbst findet im Hofgarten neben der Institution statt.

Artist, editor, and writer Aristotelis Nikolas Mochloulis is our current writer-in-residence at Villa Waldberta. He is the founder and editor of the newsletter Holdings, an irregularly released PDF sent out for free via a private mailing list since 2022. Each PDF pairs one or more texts with imagery from one or more artists, along with an editor’s note. Often, Holdings includes images or texts found in books or online that are retyped, copy-and-pasted, or scanned and included in the PDFs without permission; thought of as somewhere between appropriation and file-sharing.

For Holdings Reading on Saturday, June 21, Mochloulis will read all of the texts published to date in reverse chronological order. The reading will last approximately five hours. We will meet at Kunstverein München at 3pm; the event itself will take place in the Hofgarten next to the institution.

Während des Symposiums Parenting in the Arts kommen Künstler*innen, Vertreter*innen von Institutionen, politische Entscheidungsträger*innen, Kulturschaffende und lokale Akteur*innen zusammen, um die notwendigen Fragen zu stellen und die Instrumente zu entwickeln, die wir für eine integrativere, solidarischere und gleichberechtigtere Kunstwelt benötigen. Anhand von Vorträgen von Hettie Judah und Sascia Bailer, einer Podiumsdiskussion und Workshops wollen wir Lösungen erarbeiten, um die Strukturen umzugestalten, die Künstler*innen mit Kindern so oft ausschließen. Wir wollen uns für eine Zukunft einsetzen, in der niemand zwischen Kreativität und Care-Arbeit wählen muss.

During the Symposium Parenting in the Arts, artists, institutions, policy makers, cultural workers and local professionals are brought together - to ask the hard questions and build the tools we need for a more inclusive, supportive and equitable art world. Through keynote speeches by Hettie Judah and Sascia Bailer, a panel discussion and hands-on workshops, we will explore ways to reimagine the structures that so often exclude artist parents. We want to advocate for a future where no one is asked to choose between creativity and care.
