Iris Touliatou begreift die Ausstellung selbst als Form: Shifts verwebt die materiellen, sozialen und administrativen Abläufe des Kunstverein München zu einer Analyse von Gesten. Indem sie das Zusammenspiel ideologischer und infrastruktureller Dimensionen von Produktion und Präsentation in den Blick rücken, befragen ihre Arbeiten institutionelle Bedingungen und deren fragile Autonomieansprüche. Unter Bezugnahme auf Strategien des Theaters und der Soziologie agiert Touliatou im Spannungsfeld zwischen dem Selbstbild einer Institution und ihrer Aufführung. So bewegt sich Shifts zwischen „Bühne“ und „Hinter den Kulissen“, zwischen Ausstellungskopie, Vermittlung, Vermietungen an Dritte und wechselnden sozialen Kontexten, die jeweils durch wiederholte Handlungen die Identität des Vereins aufrechterhalten. Touliatous bislang umfangreichste Einzelausstellung in Deutschland ist noch bis Ende November zu sehen.

Iris Touliatou treats the exhibition itself as form: Shifts weaves Kunstverein München’s material, relational, and administrative practices into an analysis of gestures. It probes institutional conditions and their fragile claims to autonomy, focusing on the interplay of material, ideological, and infrastructural properties of production and display. Drawing from theater and sociology, Touliatou works in the gap between an institution’s self-image and its performance. The exhibition thus moves between “front stage” and “backstage,” between exhibition copies, mediation, sublets, and varying social settings—each sustaining institutional identity through repeated acts. Touliatou’s most extensive solo exhibition in Germany to date is on view through end of November.

Welchen Einfluss hat der sogenannte „Rechtsruck“ auf die Arbeit von Kulturinstitutionen wie Museen und Gedenkstätten in Deutschland? Wie begegnen die Institutionen und ihre Mitarbeiter*innen dieser politischen und gesellschaftlichen Situation und welche Strategien wurden bisher von Beratungsstellen entwickelt? Was für Allianzen zwischen Münchner Institutionen könnte es geben, um gemeinsam dieser Herausforderung zu begegnen? Die Paneldiskussion soll einen Raum für ein konstruktives und kooperatives Nachdenken über den Umgang mit rechten Akteur*innen und Aktionsformen in Kulturinstitutionen eröffnen und einen Anlass zur Vernetzung von Institutionen in München bieten. Die Panelist*innen werden sich mit Leona Koldehoff (Kunstverein München) über zentrale Begrifflichkeiten und mögliche Strategien austauschen und den Fokus auf den Einfluss der aktuellen politischen und gesellschaftlichen Situation auf die Forschung zur NS-Zeit, der Nachkriegszeit und Erinnerungskultur richten.

What influence does the so-called “shift to the right” have on the work of cultural institutions such as museums and memorial sites in Germany? How are institutions and their employees responding to this political and social situation, and what strategies have been developed by counselling centers to date? What kinds of alliances could be formed between Munich institutions to jointly address these current challenges? The panel discussion aims to create a space for constructive and cooperative reflection on how to deal with right-wing actors and forms of action within cultural institutions, and to provide an opportunity for networking among institutions in Munich. The panelists will discuss views on key concepts and possible strategies as well as the impact of the current political and social situation on research related to the Nazi era, the postwar period, and the culture of remembrance.
