Between ist eine Reihe, die ausgehend von klangbasierten Praktiken die Ausstellungsräume des Kunstverein München temporär in eine Bühne für internationale Musiker*innen, Performer*innen und Künstler*innen verwandelt. Das Format findet in den leeren Räumen zwischen zwei Ausstellungen für die Dauer von 24 Stunden statt. Die zweite Ausgabe der Programmreihe ist dem Werk des US-amerikanischen Komponisten Robert Ashley gewidmet und umfasst Beiträge von Kyle Gann, Will Holder, Brian McCorkle, Paul Pinto und Scott Rogers.

Ashleys Kompositionsprozess ist geprägt von der Entwicklung innovativer Notationsformen sowie einer kollaborativen Praxis. Die Veranstaltung widmet sich mit Perfect Lives einem seiner Hauptwerke. Bei der in den frühen 1980er Jahren ursprünglich für das Fernsehen produzierten Oper handelt es sich um eine vokal-ästhetische Auseinandersetzung Ashleys mit der Kultur des Mittleren Westens der USA. Das siebenteilige Opernwerk wird in seiner Gesamtheit über die Dauer der Veranstaltung von Paul Pinto und Brian McCorkle, beide Mitglieder des Varispeed Collective und ehemalige Kollaborateure Ashleys, rezitiert bzw. performt.
Kyle Gann, Komponist und Ashley-Biograf, gewährt mittels ausgewählter Interviews Einblicke in dessen Praxis. Der Künstler Scott Rogers hat Audiostücke aus Vogelgesängen konzipiert, die in stündlichen Intervallen und in Relation zur Dämmerung in München abgespielt werden. Der Typograf Will Holder wird A Last Futile Stab At Fun von Ashley rezitieren, was dieser 1979 ursprünglich als Vortrag unter dem Titel The Meanings of Modernism am Walker Art Center gehalten hatte.

Between is a series departing from music-based practices that temporarily converts the Kunstverein’s exhibition spaces into a stage for international musicians, performers, and artists. It takes place in the empty spaces between two exhibitions for the duration of 24 hours. The series’ second iteration is dedicated to the late U.S.-American composer Robert Ashley and brings together contributions by Kyle Gann, Will Holder, Brian McCorkle, Paul Pinto, and Scott Rogers.

Ashley’s compositional process is characterized by innovative forms of notation as well as a collaborative practice. The event is dedicated to one of his signature works, Perfect Lives. Originally produced for television in the early 1980s, the seven-part opera forms a vocal-aesthetic exploration of the culture of the American Midwest. The operatic work will be recited and performed in its entirety over the duration of the event by Paul Pinto and Brian McCorkle, both members of the Varispeed Collective and former collaborators of Ashley.
Composer and Ashley biographer Kyle Gann introduces Ashley’s practice through selected and reconfigured interview recordings. Artist Scott Rogers has conceived new audio pieces composed of bird calls that are played at hourly intervals and in temporal relation to the dawn in Munich. Typographer Will Holder will recite A Last Futile Stab At Fun, originally presented by Ashley as a lecture with the title The Meanings of Modernism at the Walker Art Center on October 29, 1979.

Between findet unter Einhaltung der 2G-plus-Regelung statt. Es herrscht die FFP2-Maskenpflicht; der Einlass erfolgt nur unter Vorlage eines auf die Person ausgestellten Impf- oder Genesenennachweises in schriftlicher oder elektronischer Form. Zusätzlich muss ein negativer Testnachweis vorgelegt werden (PCR-Test, nicht älter als 48 Stunden; POC-Antigentest, nicht älter als 24 Stunden). Es gibt die Möglichkeit, einen Selbsttest vor Ort durchzuführen.

Between takes place in compliance with the 2G-plus-regulation. Wearing an FFP2 mask is mandatory; admission is only granted upon presentation of a certificate of vaccination or recovery issued to the person in written or electronic form. In addition, proof of a negative test must be provided (PCR test, no older than 48 hours; POC antigen test, no older than 24 hours). If necessary, a self test can be performed onsite.
