Typisch Mann? Erotik in der Kunst
(Typical man? Eroticism in art)
Women photograph men. Photos from the competition of the magazine “Brigitte”.
Michael von Cube Drawings
January 29 - February 28, 1982
“36 female photographers are now showing their ‘picture of the man’ at the Kunstverein. The photo exhibition is the result of a competition that the women's magazine "Brigitte" had announced among professional women photographers. 218 women participated with 1680 works. The selection for the traveling exhibition was made by a jury.
Rosellina Burri Bischof, head of the Photography Foundation at the Zurich Kunsthaus;
Ute Eskildsen, photographer and head of the Steinert Collection at the Folkwang Museum, Essen;
Verena von Gagern, photographer, Munich;
Hannelore Krollpfeiffer, deputy editor-in-chief of "Brigitte," Hamburg;
Angela Neuke-Widmann, photojournalist and professor of photography at the University of Essen FB4;
Lothar Schirmer, publisher (Schirmer-Mosel Verlag), Munich.
“Brigitte” editor-in-chief Peter Brasch: “The close relationship of the magazine and its subject matter to the photograph and the photographer gave rise to the idea of organizing this exhibition.
Connected with this was the desire to give lesser-known women photographers an opportunity to show their work.”
Dr.Annelie Pohlen, art historian about the exhibition:
“Where men continue to play the traditional role, voluntarily or conditioned by the situation, the women photographers put them under an ambiguous critical magnifying glass.
This critical attitude circumscribes the wide range between sympathetic witnessing to ironic distance from supposed unpretentiousness. The man has nothing of the hero, and the woman, insofar as she is quoted in the picture as the target of conquering looks, no longer plays the role of the victim. A pleasing conclusion after years of rebellion against "typical male domination”.
The exhibition can be seen at the Kunstverein München, Galeriestrasse 4, from January 22 to February 28, 1982. Open Tuesday through Friday 12-6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday
10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Next exhibition venue: Museum der Stadt Regensburg in March.”
