Widerstand statt Anpassung
Deutsche Kunst im Widerstand gegen den Faschismus 1933 - 1945
(Resistance instead of Adaptation
German Art in Resistance to Fascism 1933 - 1945)
May 09 – June 22, 1980
Exhibition at the Badischer Kunstverein in Karlsruhe, the Frankfurter Kunstverein in Frankfurt am Main and the Kunstverein München.
“The exhibition is integrated into a differentiated reception of fascism in the Federal Republic of Germany. Its possible impact therefore results first and foremost from the topicality of the subject of "fascism", not so much from a far-reaching reappraisal of anti-fascist resistance. The history of this reappraisal in the field of visual art is short.
(...)
We assume that the emergence and development, but also the contents and forms of anti-fascist art can only be adequately understood as a part and specific expression of the general political anti-fascist resistance struggle. Anti-fascist art did not come into being only with the seizure of power in 1933, nor did it fulfill its tasks with the defeat of fascism. Intensive analysis of individual works, groups of works, but also of certain themes is, we believe, only possible if the unabridged reconstruction of the respective conditions of origin is kept in mind, as well as the principal consistency and continuity of anti-fascist art.”
