Beyond Illustration - The Art of Playboy.
28 September - 29 October 1972
“‘Beyond Illustration’ is the name of an exhibition by the men's magazine ‘Playboy’ currently on show at the Munich Kunstverein. Over the past 18 years, art director Arthur Paul has commissioned more than a thousand artworks for ‘Playboy’ for illustration purposes. With Andy Warhol, James Rosenquist, Tom Wesselmann and other top forces of the current pop industry. 71 works can now be seen in Munich. Just as Playboy always adorned itself with big names in the literary sector, it also made a fashionable effort in the visual arts and confronted the poster playmates of the Hungarian Varga with a pregnant plaster woman by George Segal. The years of the collected works show that ‘Playboy’ was not exactly avant-garde, but at least proved its nose for trends and also knew how to confirm its image as a 'magazine of international standard' in the field of illustration as well.”
