American Cartoonists / Caricatures
March 16 - April 09, 1956
Parallel exhibition of three Munich painters and American cartoonists.
“Now I have discovered the pit of murder in my heart, now I know that I am an unworthy man. Curse me will Mnemosyne, the-mother of the Muses, and throw the brush at me, having first dipped it in red ink. Struck by the Muses' smite, I shall creep along dark little walls, my hat pressed deep into my face, for I have, oh, gone to an art exhibition and enjoyed myself very much with joke drawings. This happened in the Kunstverein (Galeriestraße 4).
To all who are cursed like me, and for whom it no longer matters, I can only recommend to do similarly. They will enjoy themselves in all wickedness, as they have not done for a long time in the state of innocence. It is American illustrators, cartoonists, who exhibit here, including, to mention only the most famous names, Saul Steinberg, Peter Arno, Charles Addams, George Price, Mischa Richter. All represented with wonderful original drawings, and, let me just say it right away: the original-sized cartoon is something different than the printed magazine cliché.” (Wolfgang Christlieb on the exhibition)
