110 years of Braun & Schneider - 110 years of Munich humor.
October 1954
“110 years ago, the publishing house Braun & Schneider in Munich began publishing the ‘Fliegende Blätter’, initially in the spirit of puppet shows, with popularly dressed up allusions to contemporary events and people, later a joke sheet of cozy Bavarian humor spread over all continents. Since the centenary of the publishing house fell during the war, the 110th year of publication is now taken as an occasion to show charming original drawings and printed sheets from the long publication history of the publishing house in an exhibition at the Munich Kunstverein. One encounters a large number of well-known artists and graphic artists of the 19th century, among them Moritz von Schwind, Carl Spitzweg, Wilhelm Busch, Adolf Oberländer, Th. Th. Heine, whose later career led to the ‘Simplicissimus’. While the ‘Fliegende Blätter’, closely linked to the bourgeois world before 1914, ceased publication in 1928, the ‘Simplicissimus’ is preparing to reappear after a long break in these days. The Braun & Schneider publishing exhibition, which also includes the famous ‘Münchner Bilderbogen’, extends through the month of October.” (Neue Zürcher Zeitung, October 23, 1954)
