Lecture: Cord Riechelmann
Feeding pigeons as an aesthetic and resistant act (held in German)
Wednesday, March 16, 2022
7pm
In conjunction with the solo exhibition Every word was once an animal by Yalda Afsah, the lecture Feeding pigeons as an aesthetic and resistant act by Cord Riechelmann will take place on Wednesday, March 16 at 7pm. The biologist and philosopher will elaborate on human’s dominion over themselves and over nature, using the example of the pigeon.
The classic pigeon enthusiasts who have cared for and held the birds such as Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, and Mike Tyson have recently been joined by a few new ones like feminist science theorist Donna Haraway, artist and philosopher Fahim Amir, the great writing naturalist Esther Woolfson, and also by artist Yalda Afsah in her current exhibition on view at Kunstverein München. The lecture will include a description of the situation of pigeons in cities, art and science. Based on Amir’s dictum that “whoever feeds pigeons, feeds resistance,” the lecture will ask how the evil (that exists) comes into this world and thrives there in daily exercises of over-socialization, in which empathy is successfully rewritten into narcissism and manipulative power. The points of reference will be recent findings of ethnology and primatology.
The event will be held in German. In order to attend, please register via info@kunstverein-muenchen.de.
