Steeped in tradition Kunstverein München is one of the oldest institutions of its kind in Germany. With its spaces located in the historical arcades of the Hofgarten, the Kunstverein not only constitutes an essential part of the Munich art scene since its foundation in 1823, but is also, way beyond the city limits, recognised as an innovative and discursive platform for contemporary art and its discourse.
Here you’ll witness first, what is often going to find its way into major houses and museums not until many years later.
With our diverse exhibition program and with the accompanying lectures, artist’s talks, film screenings, art travels, symposia and publications, we create a vital and constructive space for presenting contemporary art in Munich. Orientated internationally and with consideration of the local context, the programmatic line of Kunstverein München discusses the changing role of artistic practices in a society that is increasingly dominated by visuality.
