CAREY YOUNG Debit and Credit - a Sputnik Project 2003
At the beginning of 2003, as every year, a new membership card for the Kunstverein München was sent out to its members. The membership card authorises free admission to all German Kunstvereine affiliated to the AdKV, and reduced entrance fees to other art institutions. Usually, the currently valid membership card is distinguishable from those of previous years only by its colour and date. However, for 2003 we have something new.
Carey Young is one of the Sputniks who contribute questions, criticism and ideas to the Kunstverein over a period of three years. Together with the graphic designer Christoph Steinegger in Hamburg, the London-based artist has designed a new card. Her work examines a world increasingly dominated by global business interests. Inspired by her work as consultant for an international consultancy firm, Young´s work uses the language and codes of the media, video and performance art, as well as ready-mades from the business world. This, her most recent work for the Kunstverein München, forms part of a series of interventions in the communication structure of the institution. The win-win project, in which the Kunstverein team completed a training course for successful negotiation, represents the start of this series of work. More information about this project and Carey Young´s work in general can be found in Drucksache Spring 02 edition on pages 14 - 17 and in Drucksache Fall 02 on page 33.
Debit and Credit uses the membership card as space for a new work of art, mediated and made accessible to all members of the Kunstverein, which is developing into a system facilitating participation and subscription. As in many of her earlier works, Carey Young employs a tactic of the business world and situates it in an art context in order to prompt reflection on the increasing interdependence between art and commerce. For this project the artist decided to develop the idea by adopting a system frequently used in the retail trade: the discount - or customer card, which aims to encourage frequent visits and more consumption and which is linked to a gift. The new system of the membership card not only invites the members to visit the Kunstverein more often but also offers them a gift of thanks for doing so. The reverse side of the card depicts a diagram and eight circles. With each visit the member´s card is stamped with a red star. After eight stamps the Kunstverein München expresses its appreciation for the loyalty shown with a gift, the purpose of which is to stimulate further reflection on political and social engagement. |
