Archive & Narration:

John Stezaker and T.J. Wilcox
29 July - 02 October 2005

The strategy of de- and recomposition of found images through the method of montage is central to the work of both, John Stezaker (GB) and T.J. Wilcox (USA): the imaginary archive of publicly circulating images serves as the source for the respective artistic transcriptions.

While Wilcox combines and re-organises ‘found footage’ with self-produced material in his films and thus incorporates them in new narrative contexts, Stezakers collages aim for the opposite direction: here, the method of montage does not only disrupt the homogeneity of the original image but the structure of narration itself. The concept of narrativity merely survives as supplement and potential.

For the first time all 6 of T.J. Wilcox 16mm-films from 2003 and 2005 entitled GARLANDS are shown in Germany. John Stezaker will show work from the last 30 years, primarily collages.
